The Top Drawer Collection is a collection of works by Kenai Peninsula writers in circulation at the Homer Public Library. Joy and Norman Griffin thought it a shame that many of the stories written by their local writers’ group were read once or twice by the authors’ friends and spouses then put away in top desk drawers and often forgotten. They instituted the Top Drawer collection rests on the shelves that surround the Homer Public Library’s fireplace, a testament to the success of this bi-annual program
The next selection of Top Drawer publications will take place in the winter of 2017. The 2017 Top Drawer is unique from other years, because it is in conjunction with the Homer Big Read. We are seeking submissions for plays about the history of Homer and/or contemporary life in Homer. The books selected for The Homer Big Read are The Bridge of San Luis Rey and the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder. Through this competition we seek to gain interesting perspectives on life in Homer. All entrants must be residents of lower Kenai Peninsula, and all submissions must be original works by the author or authors. Authors are limited to one volume each. All authors will be invited to participate in a Top Drawer reading held later in the year.
One winner will be selected. The winner will receive $250, he/she will receive a bound copy of their play, a bound copy will also be made available at the Homer Public Library, and a staged reading of his/her play will be performed at Pier One Theatre in the summer 2017 season.
