Friends of the Homer Library provides staff, volunteer, and financial support for youth programming at the library.  A love of reading and learning begins early, and we strive to support opportunities for kids and families to grow together.  Below are a few of the youth programs we support.

Summer Reading Program (SRP)

This is FHL’s premier program that encourages reading, learning and engaged family time.  During past summers, SRP has offered up to 83 programs, with up to 400 people signed up to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. FHL provides volunteer assistance and raises funds for all the events, including visiting author readings/performances and a culminating party, through grants and local businesses.

StoryWalK

From May through September, quality children’s picture books are posted each month along the footpath connecting the library to Poopdeck Trail.  The goal of StoryWalk is to combine early learning literacy, family engagement outdoors and physical activity.  Stories selected may relate to the summer reading program theme, appeal to young emerging readers as well as parents, and lend themselves to active participation of families of all ages.

Makers2Mentors

The library’s ongoing Makers2Mentors initiative, <M2M>, is a series of programs and opportunities for Homer youth and families to explore computational thinking and computer science in age-friendly ways.
